Welcome to the millville army air field museum

The Millville Airport was dedicated “America’s First Defense Airport” on August 2, 1941 by local, state, and federal officials. In January of 1943, the Millville Army Air Field opened as a gunnery school for fighter pilots.

Today, the Millville Army Air Field Museum is dedicated to telling the stories of those who trained here, died here, and those who went on to serve our country in WWII, and other wars throughout our history.   Heroic Gardens began working with this historic museum in 2024.

Fall 2024

The Scoping meeting

US Marine Jason and Board member Dawn met with Veterans that care for the museum to talk about what the entrance could look like.

the team

After scheduling a time that would work for the museum team, our amazing volunteers answered the call and arrived ready to start Phase 1 of the transformation.

New friends

Our team was joined by members of Angelic Hospice and Veterans in the area that wanted to help in any way they can. Thanks, Tracy and Norman!

scenes from phase 1

Our volunteers got the job done in record time. It was a great afternoon meeting new volunteers, seeing familiar faces and setting up the front of the museum for Phase 2 (see below).

Hello, Spring 2025

back in action

Welcome back, volunteers! Our goal this Spring was to remove tired shrubs and replace them with beautiful plants from our sponsor Enliven Planters. We also planted bulbs from our friends at Ocean State Job Lot.

Haircuts for all

Simple pruning took this shrub from shaggy to looking like the border plant it was meant to be!

buh bye barberry

While beautiful, its prickles didn't have the inviting presence Lisa and Joe wanted, so we took them out.

tools

If you've volunteered with us, you know we always bring the tools and supplies. Good thing we did, we needed them!

the plants

Full sun, sandy loving perennials are lined up ready for install.

Hello, Hyacinth

These beautiful flowers, planted last Fall, came through the stones.

See you soon, Millville!

This museum is a unique piece of history. If you haven't visited yet, it's time!
