helping veterans grow on rosalie street

if you take a stroll down rosalie street in Philadelphia...

You'll notice that many homes have two raised beds in their yards. This is the sign of the home of a Veteran! Thanks to our friends from EDA Contractors, and JDog Junk Removal, our volunteers were able to help each Veteran create their unique planting spaces. Read on to learn more.

Plant delivery

Volunteers Michelle and Dawn unload the incredible array of perennials and annuals that will be placed into the raised beds at the request of the Veterans.

Soil ready

Volunteers begin brining in the soil that will fill the beds. Our beds take about 6 bags of soil each.

Celebrating

One of the rules for volunteering with Heroic Gardens is to have fun. Two awesome Veterans take a moment to give us a smile.

Creating the beds

This wonderful Veteran got his hands dirty with our volunteer, Sarah to make sure he knew exactly what was being planted outside of his home.

Planting

Volunteers plant into a raised bed that also has lattice attached. The idea was suggested by the Veteran who lived there and was looking for her beds to have a dual purpose of beauty and privacy.

ADding shrubs

This Veteran requested shrubs on their property as they live on the corner. Volunteers John and Gaving to the rescue.

beautiful plants

Just a great close up of some of the amazing geranium varieties that were added to the raised beds.

A look down the street

On this block there were six Veterans and it was really special to be able to look down the street and see all of the new raised beds.

A job well done

Our Veteran with members of the team right after we finished his raised beds. Love those smiles!
